Meet the sassy cowgirls of The
Buckerettes: Robin Cape, bass and vocals; Deb Criss, guitar and
vocals; and Roberta Greenspan, fiddle and vocals. This trio of Asheville,
NC has been inspiring listeners and dancers throughout the region.
But don't let their name and honky-tonk, foot-stomping vibe fool
you. Sultry harmonies and lilting instrumentation characterize The
Buckerettes' sound, infused with the strong traditionalism of the
Blue Ridge Mountains they call home. Their diverse background of
musical histories is the foundation for The Buckerettes show, and
includes folk; swing-jazz; country, bluegrass and old time; blues,
good ole rock n’ roll and even a little Moo-town. Their lively
original and crowd pleasin’ songs reach across all fences
and rope the audience in, to ride along with them on the trail.
Outside of instrumentation, The Buckerettes offer their harmonies
with dexterity and grace. In a live setting, the gals have been
known to drop their instruments entirely and offer up sweetly blended
a capella compositions that are at once inspiring and joyous. These
gals; composers, musicians, entertainers and skilled stylists of
musical favorites, have built a following that resonate with their
authentic and passionate performances.
Robin Cape exudes passion when she sings and plays
bass. As a former member of various local eclectic pop and jazz
bands, her singing and electric bass style kept the crowds dancing.
As a Buckerette, she has picked up her upright bass, whipped out
her writing pen and dove head first into her love of singing.
Robin is a mover and shaker, involved for over 18 years, past
and present in this community, and shares those experiences through
her thoughtful and honest song writing.
Deb Criss, guitarist for the band, lends strong
rhythms along with her delightful leads to the musical mix. Her
saddlebags are full of songs, both her own great and varied originals,
as well as an abundance from memory lane. She has played music
in the area for over 20 years, most notably with the Crimes of
Fashion and Grandmother Time, having toured nationally for six.
Deb has worked in the healing arts for many years as a mind/body
holistic practitioner and nurse and is most at home in nature.
Roberta Greenspan is a fiddler who can knock your
socks off with her wild bowing or lull you to a hush with her
heartfelt accompaniment. And her ability to lend artistic support
to the vocals, moods and genres of each song rounds out the full
sounds of the other two gals. After spending 15 years setting
up community gardens in Pittsburgh, PA and Asheville NC, Roberta
traveled for three years: picking coffee, planting papaya trees
and playing music all the way, returning to Asheville just in
time to join the band.
Whether it's a private party or event, concert
or festival, The Buckerettes’ show is laughter, energy and
presence. From honkytonks to uptown social soirees, this trio
can get almost anyone on the dance floor or engage an audience
for an evening of songs, comedy and pure entertainment. It’s
more than a musical experience, it’s not only about the
love these women have for their voices and instruments and how
they weave them all together but also about the stories and songs
that connect them with the audience. Hang on to your saddles;
with The Buckerettes leading the trail ride, anything can happen!
